In Circles, the ensemble is divided into to three small groups: one center stage, with two ensembles on either side. This creates a unique experience for the performer regarding how they interact with each other and the space between them. A single note gesture is passed between the center stage musicians. The music builds as the other ensembles join in the activity. Near the end, we return to that opening gesture as it continually cycles between all three ensembles, even as the lights fade to darkness. In the light, we experience that single pitch tossed between instruments in their divided groups. In the dark, that pitch is shared by a cohesive unit of sound.
