Density is a piece based on Virginia Woolf’s The Moment: Summer’s Night. This piece is based on the concept of a technique called “Abstract Tonality” – essentially, abstract sounds, but organized in an auditory soundscape to present itself as somewhat of a pseudo-tonal piece, and also utilizing the full range and timbre of the instruments. Density is performed and presented in ways that are not typical to the traditional ear, and yet still maintain the use and structure of tonal harmony.
As for expressing the poetry, Virginia Woolf describes a moment experienced in many perspectives ranging from a couple arguing to the simple sensations within daily life which may be positive or negative. The piece therefore attempts to explore her soundscape of the experience of a moment in one dense composition.
