Derek Sumpmann was born and raised in Denver, Colorado, and has been studying cello for over 17 years. In recent years, however, Derek has developed an affinity for electronic music – mainly house and techno – in an effort to understand the essence of this technological take on non-verbal music. As classical and electronic music usually have this trait in common, it only seemed natural to explore the reaches of modern composition as a member of Nebula Ensemble. Additionally, Derek seeks to explore the creation of feeling and emotion through particular musical moments. His motivation for creation comes from the fact that for the majority of his cello career, Derek has spent time preserving a deceased composer’s vision of musical expression rather than exploring contemporary compositional creativity. Derek is currently studying with Matthew Zalkind at the University of Denver, where he additionally plays in a chamber group and the Lamont Symphony Orchestra.
