nolan-image3-version-3When composing, I find myself thinking a lot about rests, and how the difference between a beat or half a beat between musical phrases can make such a difference in expression. “Expecting” experiments with these silences, playing with the audience’s anticipation. I wrote the piece in a scherzando style, often juxtaposing the marimba and cello with the brass trio, and erratically truncating and restarting phrases.
